What is happening in Gaza now?

Update

The rising tensions in the Middle East appear to have reached an unprecedented escalation, raising fears that the situation will deteriorate in the coming hours and days. The already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza is getting worse, as already suffering civilians once again face the horror of major air strikes.

At least 4,651 Palestinians, including 1,873 children, 1,023 women and 187 elderly people, were killed, and more than 14,245 others were injured, and this number is expected to rise as air strikes continue.

Of the 500,000 people in the Gaza Strip, air strikes are believed to have forced more to flee their homes. They are seeking shelter in dozens of schools, and are in desperate need of food and other basic items to survive.

Islamic Relief is dismayed by recent reports of deaths and violence, and continues to strongly condemn any acts of violence against civilians. We call on all parties to exercise restraint to avoid further civilian casualties.

We have been providing humanitarian relief in the occupied Palestinian territory since 1997, serving as a lifeline to communities suffering from the devastating effects of occupation, siege and recurring conflict. As Palestinian families face new suffering in Gaza, Islamic Relief is calling on supporters to help us provide much-needed humanitarian assistance.

With your support, Islamic Relief will remain a lifeline for Palestinian families. Please give generously to our Palestine Emergency Appeal now.

The Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated places on Earth.

Gaza has been under a brutal Israeli siege since 2007, and is widely described as the world's largest open-air prison. The blockade deprives 2.2 million people of their basic rights and isolates them from the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory and the wider world. It has devastated Gaza's economy, increased poverty and unemployment, and paralyzed basic services such as health care, education, water and sanitation.

A third of the people in Palestine live below the poverty line. Most people do not get enough food, 90% of available water is unfit for public consumption, and psychological trauma affects ordinary families. Many residents depend on humanitarian aid provided by charities such as Islamic Relief, just to survive.

Gaza's healthcare system is particularly fragile, with overstretched and ill-equipped health facilities struggling to meet growing needs. They also rely on support from charities such as Islamic Relief.

Why does Gaza need our help?

Gazans have to deal with continuous nights of airstrikes due to the ongoing conflict. It is time to help Gaza and its people.

After many years of conflict, Palestinians still feel unsafe in their country. The economy has been damaged by political instability and ongoing conflict. The siege on Gaza causes chaos on a daily basis. We provide vital healthcare to help vulnerable people rebuild their lives.

The situation in Gaza

Since 2007, Gaza has been subject to a land, sea and air blockade imposed by Israel. Gaza has been described as a 'prison in the open air.' Conditions in Gaza were dire even before the recent escalation in the conflict, with occupation, blockades and recurring conflict causing deep poverty and suffering.

Islamic Relief is on the ground in Gaza

Islamic Relief is now focusing on Gaza

Our focus now is on priority health needs; Such as providing medical supplies and equipment including medicines, disposable items, medical kits and food to patients and medical staff.

If the conflict worsens and people are displaced, we will support affected families and internally displaced people. We will provide food, hygiene kits and other essential non-food items.

Across the region, we have been heavily involved in rebuilding the Palestine Future Centre, where we work with children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy. We are now working to support the local healthcare system.

We are ready to respond by supporting hospitals in providing medical assistance quickly to help save as many lives as possible in the event of any other emergency.

By supporting medical staff and families across Gaza, we are working to support as many people in crisis as possible.

How can you help Gaza?

Although the conflict continues, our teams are on the ground ready to help Gaza now. We will provide life-saving care in areas where the health system is struggling to cope. Gaza's health system is under great pressure due to staff shortages and shortages of medical supplies.

About half of the population living in Palestine needs vital aid and water. Despite electricity shortages throughout Gaza, we are working to support people in need across the region.

For just £150, you can provide psychosocial support to six children affected by the conflict. Donate to our Gaza Relief Fund and help save lives now.

Why do the people of Gaza need your help?

With nearly half of the population across the Palestinian Territories in need of humanitarian assistance, your donations are desperately needed to help rebuild the lives of the most vulnerable people across Gaza. Mohammed is just one of many people supported by Islamic Relief in Gaza, but there are thousands more in desperate need of your support.

I have lived with loss many times in my life. My father died and I lost my sight when I was young. But I never lost my resolve and did not let my disability prevent me from developing myself or my community. I don't ask for help from others if I can do something myself. Every morning I prepare my own food and get ready for school like my sisters and brothers. When I want to order a taxi, I try several times before asking someone for help. Once a week I play football. Thank God, I am one of the outstanding students in my school and get the highest grades. I love the Arabic language and this encourages me to write. She recently won first place in a story and poetry writing competition at the Gaza Governorate level. After my father died, Islamic Relief took care of me. The support covers my basic needs, covers the cost of transportation and everything I need for school.
